Mom started making this dish when we moved to Puerto Rico in the early 70's. It became a family favorite and takes me back to that place and time with each bite.

  • 2
    ham steaks, cubed
  • 1 large
  • 1 large
    bell pepper
  • 4 clove
  • 1 can(s)
    tomato sauce
  • 2-3 can(s)
    water (tomato sauce can)
  • 1 Tbsp
    oregano, dried
  • 1 Tbsp
    cilantro, dried (i use a small bunch of fresh, minced)
  • 1/2 tsp
    black pepper
  • 2 can(s)
    favorite pinto beans (or can use homemade)

How to Make Puerto Rican Rice and Beans


  1. Brown diced ham in oil
  2. Add onion, garlic and bell pepper and saute with ham
  3. Add tomato sauce & water along with oregano, cilantro and pepper
  4. Simmer for 30 min., covered
  5. Add 2 cans of pinto beans, cover and simmer 1 hour (you may need to add a little water after adding beans, use your judgement)
  6. Remove from heat and serve over rice
