Mom started making this dish when we moved to Puerto Rico in the early 70's. It became a family favorite and takes me back to that place and time with each bite.

Ingredients
- 2 - ham steaks, cubed
- 1 large onion
- 1 large bell pepper
- 4 cloves garlic
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 2-3 cans water (tomato sauce can)
- 1 tablespoon oregano, dried
- 1 tablespoon cilantro, dried (i use a small bunch of fresh, minced)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cans favorite pinto beans (or can use homemade)
How To Make puerto rican rice and beans

Step 1Brown diced ham in oil

Step 2Add onion, garlic and bell pepper and saute with ham

Step 3Add tomato sauce & water along with oregano, cilantro and pepper

Step 4Simmer for 30 min., covered

Step 5Add 2 cans of pinto beans, cover and simmer 1 hour (you may need to add a little water after adding beans, use your judgement)

Step 6Remove from heat and serve over rice
