    tbsp. oil
  • 1
    large onion, chopped
  • 2
    heaping tsp. garlic powder
  • 1
    28 oz, can whole peeled tomatoes with juice
  • 2
    8 oz. cans tomato sauce
  • 2
    tsp. dried oregano
  • 2
    tsp. dried basil
  • 2
    whole bay leaves
  • 1
    tbsp. sugar
  • ·
    salt and pepper to taste

How to Make Marinara Sauce, Basic and Easy


  1. Over medium heat, heat oil in a large skillet and add onion, and garlic powder. Saute for 3 to 5 minutes until onions begin to appear translucent. Add the tomatoes and tomato sauce; stir. Add the herbs and bay leaves. Sprinkle in sugar, salt and pepper. Lower heat and continue to simmer, uncovered, for about 20 to 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  2. NOTE: Double recipe for family or company.
  3. Using kitchen scissors, I always cut the tough stems from canned tomatoes because they never cook down.
