large onion, chopped

heaping tsp. garlic powder

28 oz, can whole peeled tomatoes with juice

8 oz. cans tomato sauce
2
tsp. dried oregano
2
tsp. dried basil
2
whole bay leaves
1
tbsp. sugar
salt and pepper to taste

How to Make Marinara Sauce, Basic and Easy

Step-by-Step

  • 1Over medium heat, heat oil in a large skillet and add onion, and garlic powder. Saute for 3 to 5 minutes until onions begin to appear translucent. Add the tomatoes and tomato sauce; stir. Add the herbs and bay leaves. Sprinkle in sugar, salt and pepper. Lower heat and continue to simmer, uncovered, for about 20 to 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  • 2NOTE: Double recipe for family or company.
  • 3Using kitchen scissors, I always cut the tough stems from canned tomatoes because they never cook down.
