I first made this years ago, when my kids were little and they liked it when main dishes were a little sweet. I also suspect they liked it because it looks like a volcano.

Ingredients

  • 2 slice
    orowheat country white bread, shredded to bits
  • 1/2 c
    applesauce, unsweetened
  • 1 lb
    ground meat (i use buffalo)
  • 1
    egg, slightly beaten
  • 1/4 c
    finely chopped celery
  • 2 Tbsp
    finely chopped onion
  • 1 tsp
    dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • dash(es)
    pepper
  • TOPPING

  • 1/2 c
    applesauce, unsweetened
  • 1 Tbsp
    brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp
    dijon mustard

How to Make Applesauce Meat Loaf

Step-by-Step

  1. Combine bread crumbs and applesauce in a medium bowl. Add ground meat, egg, celery, onion, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper; blend thoroughly. Shape into a round loaf in an 8x8x2-inch baking pan.
  2. Combine topping ingredients in a small bowl. With a spoon make a crater-like depression in top of loaf. Pour topping into crater.
  3. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
