With my German heritage I'm always on the lookout for authentic foods from Deutschland. I'm thinking this dish could benefit from some caraway seed, either in addition to or instead of paprika. Either way, it's going to be delicious! Recipe: recipelion.com 08-21-14

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef for stew
  • 2 large onions, diced
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon mixed dried herbs (thyme, rosemary, marjoram)
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 large carrots, diced
  • 4 - potatoes, diced
  • 1 can (15 oz) peeled tomatoes
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 bottle dry red wine
  • - salt and pepper, to taste

How To Make old country german goulash

  • Step 1
    In a large skillet, heat olive oil. Add meat and cook until brown. Add onion and cook until transparent.
  • Step 2
    Stir in carrots, potatoes, and herbs. Add red wine, tomatoes, garlic and spices and simmer, covered, for 2 to 3 hours. Add water if necessary.
  • Step 3
    May serve with dumplings or noodles.
