My husband's family always made Italian beef for family get togethers. I put this recipe together a lot of years ago when trying to make the perfect Italian beef for his family. This one became my go to recipe from then on! The flavor is delicious! I like to serve it on toasted hoagie buns with melted mozzarella over the top. You could top your Italian beef with giardiniera if you like, as is a traditional topping for this dish.

prep time 5 Min
cook time 12 Hr
method Slow Cooker Crock Pot
yield 8 hoagies

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 teaspoons italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped parsley
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 - green pepper, very finely diced (i put it in the food processor)
  • 1 - bay leaf
  • 1 - (3-4 pound) english roast (or chuck or rump roast)

How To Make italian beef

  • Step 1
Place roast in slow cooker. In a pot combine water with wine, Italian dressing, salt, ground black pepper, Italian seasoning, onion powder, parsley, garlic, bay leaf, and green pepper. Stir well and pour over roast.
  • Step 2
Cover slow cooker and cook on Low for 12 hours or until beef is tender enough to easily shred with a fork. When done, remove bay leaf, and shred meat with a fork.
  • Step 3
If there is a lot of liquid, drain some off and set aside. Serve as a dip for sandwiches or extra sauce to spoon over meat.
  • Step 4
I serve this on toasted hoagie buns with melted mozzarella over the top.
