I have been making this recipe for several years.

Its easy to make,and it's good.

My family and friends love it.

You can use your own pasta sauce, or store bought. This time I used store bought. (I ran out of my pasta sauce.)

Ingredients

  • 2 pkg
    18 ozs. each. italian sausage links, mild
  • 2 Tbsp
    olive oil
  • 2 medium
    yellow onions, peeled and sliced into rings
  • 2-3 large
    green bell pepper, seeded and sliced
  • 1 can(s)
    7 oz. mushrooms pieces & stems, drained
  • 2 jar(s)
    24 oz. each, pasta sauce. i used ragu traditional.(or use your own)
  • 1 c
    water
  • 1 Tbsp
    kosher salt, or to taste
  • 1 tsp
    ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 1 pkg
    hamburger buns.

How to Make ITALIAN SAUSAGE SANDWICHES - W/ONIONS AND PEPPERS

Step-by-Step

  1. Get all ingredients together.
  2. Cut the links in half and remove skin.
  3. Place olive oil in an electric skillet. Place links in skillet and turn skillet to 375 degrees.
  4. Meanwhile, with sausage cooking, prepare the bell peppers and onions.
  5. Cook sausage on one side until brown. Turn sausage over.
  6. After turning sausage over, place onions on top of sausage. cook for about 2 minutes.
  7. Place bell peppers, mushrooms and pasta sauce on top of onions. Pour 1 cup of water on top. Turn electric skillet down to 225 degrees.Simmer for about 5 hours. Covered.
  8. Stir about once an hour, by taking a spatula and go underneath the sausage allowing the sauce and onions, peppers and mushrooms to flow underneath sausage.
  9. After about 5 hours, take hamburger bun and place sausage with a fork on bottom bun, then place sauce and peppers, onions and mushroom on top of sausage. Take and cover with top of bun. ENJOY!!!
