I love these burgers with sliced black olives. They're also excellent with sauteed onions, peppers & mushrooms.

  • 8 oz
italian sausage (your choice of hot, mild or sweet, about 2 links)
  • 1 lb
    lean ground beef
  • 1 tsp
    dried oregano
  • 1 tsp
    dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp
    fennel seeds, crushed
  • 1/8 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp
salt (optional; i don't use it)
  • 6 slice
    mozzarella cheese (fresh is best)
  • 3/4 c
    marinara sauce (your favorite brand)
  • 6
toasted hamburger buns or italian bread rolls

How to Make Italian Meatball Burgers

  1. Prepare your outdoor grill or countertop grill.
  2. Remove the casings from the sausage. Combine sausage, ground beef & species in a bowl. Form into 6 equal patties.
  3. Place patties on outdoor grill rack coated with cooking spray & grill for 5 minutes. Turn & grill for 2-3 more minutes. Place a slice of mozzarella on each patty & grill 4-5 more minutes or until a meat thermometer inserted in the middle of the burgers registers 165 degrees. Remove from the grill; let stand about 5 minutes. Place one patty on the bottom half of each bun; top with marinara sauce & the top of the bun.
  4. NOTE: If you prepare these burgers using a countertop grill, your cooking time will be shortened because countertop grills cook from both sides. Check interior temperature after about 5 minutes. Top with mozzarella when appropriate; cover loosely with aluminum foil to allow cheese to melt.
