fried southern catfish
When I was about 4 or 5 year old, my late Mamaw fixed this recipe as a main dish to her "Southern Style Hush Puppies" recipe, which I have posted on here. Note: Since I am from Mississippi, my family and I eat this a lot.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 3 teaspoons black pepper
- 2 teaspoons ground red pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 2 1/2 cups self rising cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- - catfish filets
- - peanut oil for frying
How To Make fried southern catfish

Step 1Combine first 4 ingredients in a shallow pan.

Step 2Stir together buttermilk and egg in a bowl.

Step 3Combine the cornmeal, garlic powder and thyme in a large Ziploc bag.

Step 4Dredge catfish in flour mixture.

Step 5The dip in buttermilk mixture.

Step 6Next shake catfish in sealed Ziploc bag.

Step 7Fry in a deep fryer or heavy duty cast iron skillet in hot peanut oil.

Step 8Serve with hush puppies.
