I like to use Japanese rice seasoning called furikake pronounced (furry cocky) Gives the rice a great flavor and amps up the chicken dish. Shoyu chicken is a main staple in Hawaii and is the Japanese version of soy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 8 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger grated
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon each paprika and red pepper flakes
  • 6 - boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • - fresh cilantro for garnish
  • - seasoned rice for serving

How To Make shoyu chicken

  • Step 1
    Mix all the ingredients up to the chicken together until well blended. Add the chicken pieces and let marinate 1 to 2 hours.
  • Step 2
    Grill or fry until done. Serve over seasoned rice and garnish with cilantro.
