This is a recipe that was handed down to my mom by my Irish grandma. My dad came from a large family, and grandma would make this during the Depression. This was an easy recipe to make that fed a lot, and wasn't too expensive to make. My grandma would use any leftover meat that they had on hand. I'm told she even used pot roast, or sausage. My mom likes to make the BBQ sauce and use it for other recipes, too.

prep time 10 Min
cook time 35 Min
method Stove Top
yield 4 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground meat of your choice
  • 1 tablespoon prepared mustard (yellow mustard)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (brown sugar is good, too)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

How To Make really good bbq

  • Step 1
In a large skillet brown the meat and onions, drain off excess fat.
  • Step 2
Combine all other ingredients and pour over meat mixture. Stir to combine.
  • Step 3
Over a low heat, simmer BBQ for 30-45 minutes. This can be made ahead of time and warmed up the next day. It's actually better when you do this because the flavors tend to marry overnight. I like to make this and then freeze it for a later date!
