This is a recipe I picked up last week and added a few of my own bits-and-bobs. A great dish to serve with some steamed white rice or veggies. You might want to make more of the sauce because it is to die for… In my opinion. Five stars from the crew and put on the Autumn rotation. So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

How To Make low-and-slow essentials: awesome sesame chicken

  • Step 1
    PREP/PREPARE
  • Step 2
What will you need? You will need a slow cooker or Insta Pot, to make this recipe.
  • Step 3
What is Sesame Chicken? Sesame chicken is a dish served in Chinese restaurants in the United States. It is similar to General Tso's chicken; except Tso’s chicken is spicy, whereas sesame chicken is sweet. Many of the recipes use sugar, but in my version, we will be using clover honey.
  • Step 4
What to serve with Sesame Chicken? Rice freshly steamed, is the obvious choice; however, you could put it over noodles, or on some fresh greens. It is also served with veggies, such as broccoli and baby corn.
  • Step 5
How to store Sesame Chicken? Based on the ingredients this recipe can be frozen and defrosted at a later time. If you store it in a good container in the fridge, it will last 3 – 4 days. If placed in a regular freezer bag, it will last 2 – 3 months. If properly vacuum-sealed, it will last over a year.
  • Step 6
Gather your ingredients (mise en place).
  • Step 7
    Cut up your chicken.
  • Step 8
I tried this recipe using chicken breasts and thighs. In my opinion, the thighs won out. They were nice and moist while the breasts came out a bit on the dry side.
  • Step 9
Add the chopped chicken and sauce ingredients to the bowl of your slow cooker/Insta Pot and stir to combine.
  • Step 10
I usually add the sauce ingredients first, stir them together, then add the chicken.
  • Step 11
Cook on low for 3 hours, or on high for 1 1/2 hours. I prefer low.
  • Step 12
At the end of the allotted time, mix the arrowroot or cornstarch with water to make a slurry and add it to the chicken. Then add the vinegar and sesame oil, stir to combine, and allow to cook for another 10 or so minutes, or until the sauce thickens.
  • Step 13
    PLATE/PRESENT
  • So yummy
    Step 14
Serve over steamed rice, noodles, or whatever you choose. Enjoy.
