I got this from my boyfriend's mother about a year ago and have made it several times. It is easy and very good, the best part is you can easily customize to your families taste.

prep time 10 Min
cook time 20 Min

  • 1 pound chicken, cooked or browned hamburger
  • 4 - bouillon cubes beef or chicken
  • 1 - onion
  • 1 can bean sprouts
  • 1 can mushrooms, dried
  • 1 can water chestnuts
  • 1 pinch sugar
  • - soy sauce
  • - water to cover meat
  • - cornstarch mixed with water to thicken
  • 4 stalks celery

How To Make chow mien

  • Step 1
Cut up chicken into bite size pcs and brown or for hamburger crumble as browning.
  • Step 2
Take browned meat put in kettle with onion, celery, water and bouillon. When bouillon is mixed in add soy sauce and sugar. I add a little soy sauce and taste then if more is needed can add a little more as a little goes a long way. Bring to boil.
  • Step 3
Turn down to simmer and cook until celery is tender. Add cornstarch mixture and stir until thick about 10 mins. When it gets thick add the drained water chestnuts, mushrooms and bean sprouts. Stir until warm about 2 mins. You are done and ready to enjoy
  • Step 4
Serve over cooked rice or with chow mien noodles
