  • 1
    chicken, cooked and deboned (save broth)
  • 2 c
  • 1 tsp
  • 1/2 c
  • 1/2 - 1 c
    ice water
  • 2 c
    chicken broth
  • 2 c
  • 1/2 c
    unsalted butter
  • ·
    salt & pepper, to taste

How to Make Chicken and Dumplings


  1. Blend flour, salt and shortening until mixture resembles corn meal. Slowly add ice water until it makes a dough.
  2. Roll dough thinly on a floured surface and cut into strips.
  3. In a Dutch oven, add the broth and milk. Add the butter. Salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a slow boil, then lower heat and simmer.
  4. Add one strip at a time to the simmering liquid. DO NOT STIR! Simply push the strip down into the liquid with a spoon.
  5. Cook for 15 minutes, then carefully and gently add the meat.
