asian essentials: general tso’s chicken
This is an easy/peasy recipe to assemble and tastes really awesome. It took me three tries to get it right; however, it was worth the effort. I am calling it General Tso’s chicken, but in reality, it does have additional elements that I added. So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

How To Make asian essentials: general tso’s chicken
-
Step 1PREP/PREPARE
-
Step 2You will need a slow cooker or an Instant Pot to make this recipe.
-
Step 3I tried this recipe using boneless, skinless chicken breasts and thighs, and while both were okay, I preferred chicken thighs.
-
Step 4Gather your ingredients (mise en place).
-
Step 5Chop up the chicken into bite-size bits.
-
Step 6THE SLURRY (WITH THE FRINGE ON TOP)
-
Step 7Drain all of the pineapple juice from the can, then whisk in the cornstarch or arrowroot powder.
-
Step 8Most cans of pineapple have a bunch of juice. You want about 2 – 3 ounces. If you do not have that much just add a bit of water, or pineapple juice from a bottle.
-
Step 9I like a thin sauce, so I usually just add a tablespoon of cornstarch/arrowroot powder. If you want it thicker, simply add more. And, at the end of the cooking process, if you still want it thicker you can always add a bit more.
-
Step 10THE ASSEMBLY
-
Step 11Whisk all of the sauce ingredients together, then whisk in the slurry, and finally add the pineapple.
-
Step 12Add the mixture to the bowl of your slow cooker (Instant Pot) and stir in the chicken.
-
Step 13Cook on low for 3 – 4 hours, or high for 1.5 – 2 hours.
-
Step 14It is almost impossible to burn this recipe; however, you can overcook the chicken. I would suggest that after 1.5 hours check to see how things are progressing.
-
Step 15PLATE/PRESENT
-
Step 16Serve over a plate of steaming rice. Enjoy.
-
Step 17Keep the faith, and keep cooking.
