These seem to always be popular with the adults. I like to make them for a crowd and place the uncooked patties in the refrigerator on a jelly roll pan lined with waxed paper. They can be refrigerated for 4-5 hours.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce
  • 6 - hamburger buns, split
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • CARAMELIZED ONIONS:
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced and separated into rings
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed

How To Make caramelized onion burgers

  • Step 1
    Heat coals or gas grill.
  • Step 2
Make caramelized onions. Melt butter in 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Cook onions in butter 8 to 9 minutes, stirring frequently, until clear. (I usually cook them longer....maybe 15 to 20 minutes). Stir in brown sugar. Cook about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until onions are caramel colored and liquid is absorbed. Set aside until ready to serve.
  • Step 3
Mix beef, onion, relish, salt and pepper.
  • Step 4
Shape mixture into 6 patties, about 1/4 inch thick; brush with barbecue sauce.
  • Step 5
Grill patties uncovered about 4 inches from medium heat 10 to 15 minutes, turning once, until no longer pink in center and juice is clear.
  • Step 6
Serve on buns with cheese, onions and additional barbecue sauce.
