my son was in the Marine Corps - so this is my version on this 'classic dish' a simple recipe of ground beef. Serve this over mashed potatoes, english muffins or toast.

  • 1 1/2 lb
    ground beef, 80/20 mix
  • 1/2 c
    onion, chopped
  • 4-6
    white button mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp
  • 3 Tbsp
    all-purpose flour
  • 1 c
    beef broth
  • 1/2 - 3/4 c
evaporated milk, can use 2% milk
  • sea salt & pepper to taste

Brown the ground beef in a medium skillet over medium-high heat, until meat is no longer pink. Add onion and mushrooms to mixture, saute. Drain excess fat and set aside. Melt the butter or margarine in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Slowly add the flour, stirring constantly, to form a brown roux. Pour in beef broth and milk, mixing well. Add ground beef, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve this dish over mashed potatoes, toast or english muffins.
