I've been making this (and many other recipes) for years. My kids have now struck out on their own, and have been requesting I photo-journal my recipes. Here's a family favorite (to say the least!) lol!

Ingredients For the high desert diner's salisbury steak

  • 3 lb
    very lean, ground beef
  • 1
small to medium onion, diced very fine (more or less to your taste)
  • 1 - 2 Tbsp
jalapeno pepper relish (you can finely dice jalapeno peppers fresh or from the jar - more or less to your taste)
  • 2 Tbsp
liquid smoke or your favorite meat marinade
  • 1 Tbsp
mrs. dash (original or your favorite flavor salt free spice seasoning blend)
  • 4 c
prepared brown gravy (i use mccormicks brown gravy mix for ease – regular or with mushrooms)
  • 4 lb
    yukon gold potatoes, diced
  • 1/2 c
    butter (one stick)
  • 1/2 c
heavy cream (milk will do fine)
  • salt and pepper to taste

How To Make the high desert diner's salisbury steak

  • 1
Prepare a 9X13 casserole dish by lightly coating with an oil spray, such as Pam. Make the gravy (either from scratch or following the directions on the package.)
  • 2
Mix together (I use my mixer for ease) the beef, onion, relish, liquid smoke, and Mrs. Dash. Form 8 equal patties and either fry or grill until cooked (medium.) Place into the prepared casserole dish and pour the brown gravy over the top. Place “uncovered” in the preheated oven for about 20 – 30 minutes (until bubbling – or when the mashed potatoes are ready to serve.)
  • 3
Boil the potatoes until tender, drain, and mash with the butter, cream, and salt/pepper to taste.
  • 4
Remove the casserole dish from the oven. Scoop some potatoes onto your plate, and place a beef patty on top. Finish with a ladle full of gravy on top. Serve with veggies or a salad.
