I have used round steak or a small chuck roast for this recipe. With the round steak, I cut the meat into strips. With the chuck roast, I cut it into chunks.

Ingredients

  • 1 - medium round beef steak, sliced or
  • 1 - small beef chuck roast, cut in bite-sized chunks
  • 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup regular soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 - small onion, sliced
  • 1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 can bamboo shoots, drained
  • 1 can bean sprouts, drained (or 1 cup fresh)
  • 1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained

How To Make sukiyaki

  • Step 1
    In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, brown the beef.
  • Step 2
    In a small bowl, combine dark brown sugar, soy sauce, flour and water. Pour well-blended mixture over browned beef.
  • Step 3
    Add onion, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts and cook for 5-10 minutes. Add bean sprouts and mushrooms and cook 5 minutes longer. Serve over prepared basmati or jasmine rice.
