Ingredients For spicy kerala style mutton or beef curry

  • 1 kg
    ( 2 pounds) mutton or beef cubes
  • 2 md
    onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 Tbsp
    coriander powder
  • 1 Tbsp
    red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp
    turmeric powder
  • 1
    inch ginger root
  • 6 clove
    cloves garlic
  • 1
    inch cinnamon bark
  • 1 tsp
    white poppy seeds, can use black
  • 3
    whole cloves
  • 1/2 tsp
    cumin seeds
  • 2 c
    grated coconut
  • 2
    gambooge (tamarind fruit)
  • a sprig of coriander leaves

How To Make spicy kerala style mutton or beef curry

    Pressure cook the mutton with salt and set aside.

    Blend coriander powder, chili powder, poppy seeds, ginger, garlic, turmeric powder, cinnamon, cumin seeds and coconut. You can grate the fresh coconut if you like or just cut it into smallish chunks

    Heat oil in a pan and sauté the onions until golden brown. Add the coriander and coconut mix to the pan and sauté further for 10 minutes.

    Add the cooked mutton pieces and cover them with water. Cook until the gravy reduces slightly and then add the gambooge. Remove the cloves and discard.

    Garnish with coriander sprig and serve hot.
