Ingredients

  • 2 pounds boneless chuck roast, cut into 1 1/2-in. cubes
  • - flour
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 2 small bay leaves
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 - carrots, quartered
  • 8 small onions
  • 3 - potatoes, quartered

How To Make southern-style brown stew

  • Step 1
    Dip beef into flour. Brown an all sides in shortening in skillet. Add 4 cups boiling water and next 6 ingredients. Simmer for 2 hours, stirring frequently.
  • Step 2
    Add vegetables. Cook for 30 minutes longer or until vegetables are tender. Thicken stew with flour if desired.
