    boneless chuck roast, cut into 1 1/2-in. cubes

    lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 2 small
    bay leaves
  • 2 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 2 clove
    garlic, minced
  • 6
    carrots, quartered
  • 8 small
  • 3
    potatoes, quartered

How to Make Southern-Style Brown Stew


  1. Dip beef into flour. Brown an all sides in shortening in skillet. Add 4 cups boiling water and next 6 ingredients. Simmer for 2 hours, stirring frequently.
  2. Add vegetables. Cook for 30 minutes longer or until vegetables are tender. Thicken stew with flour if desired.
  3. Serve and enjoy!
