Sloppy Joes

When we would have family or friends coming from out of town I liked to make Sloppy Joes. They were easy to make and warm up whenever the company would arrive.

In those days, canned sauces were too expensive, so I came up with a sauce similar to Manwich. I know it is better now, because I know what is actually in the sauce.

I serve my Sloppy Joes with cold slaw and potato chips.

2 1/2 lb
lean ground beef
1 medium
green bell pepper, diced small
1 medium
onion, diced small
2 pt
tomato sauce, i prefer homecanned
2-3 Tbsp
brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 c
apple cider vinegar
2 tsp
chili powder or to taste
1 tsp
granulated garlic powder
kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

How to Make Sloppy Joes


  • 1Brown ground beef, bell pepper and onion until vegetables are tender and the meat is cooked through. Break up meat with a fork as it is browning.
  • 2Add tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, chili powder, garlic powder and salt and pepper to taste.
  • 3Simmer to desired thickness. Serve either open or closed on a hamburger or Kaiser roll.
