In those days, canned sauces were too expensive, so I came up with a sauce similar to Manwich. I know it is better now, because I know what is actually in the sauce.
I serve my Sloppy Joes with cold slaw and potato chips.
Ingredients
-
2 1/2 lblean ground beef
-
1 mediumgreen bell pepper, diced small
-
1 mediumonion, diced small
-
2 pttomato sauce, i prefer homecanned
-
2-3 Tbspbrown sugar, firmly packed
-
1/4 capple cider vinegar
-
2 tspchili powder or to taste
-
1 tspgranulated garlic powder
-
·kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
How to Make Sloppy Joes
- Brown ground beef, bell pepper and onion until vegetables are tender and the meat is cooked through. Break up meat with a fork as it is browning.
- Add tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, chili powder, garlic powder and salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer to desired thickness. Serve either open or closed on a hamburger or Kaiser roll.
