sloppy joe grilled cheese

My family loves sloppy joes but I prefer to make them from scratch. I always have the ingredients on hand and don't have to rely on a can. This recipe takes it to the next level by turning them into toasty grilled cheese sandwiches. You can absolutely use this sloppy joe mixture for regular joes on buns but making them grilled is sublime.

Ingredients For sloppy joe grilled cheese

  • 1 lb
    ground beef
  • 1/2
    onion, diced
  • 1/2
    bell pepper, diced
  • 2 clove
    garlic, chopped or grated
  • 1 can
    crushed tomatoes 14.5 ounces
  • 1/2 c
    ketchup
  • 3 Tbsp
    bbq sauce
  • 1/4 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 Tbsp
    balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp
    yellow mustard
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 to 10 slice
    american or cheddar cheese
  • 8 to 10 slice
    bread
  • 1/4 c
    butter, room temperature
  • sliced dill pickles, optional

How To Make sloppy joe grilled cheese

  • 1
    Brown ground beef with onion and bell pepper, drain off fat. Add chopped garlic and cook for a minute more.

    Add remaining ingredients except bread cheese and butter. Simmer on med low until sauce is reduced and thick, about 15-20 minutes

    Butter one side of each slice of bread, place one slice of cheese on the unbuttered side the add two heaping spoons of sloppy joe mixture and pickles if desired then another slice of cheese and the other slice of bread.

    Griiddle on medium heat till toasty brown, turn and griddle the other side. Enjoy.
