beef short ribs
1/3 c
1 tsp
3/4 tsp
black pepper
2 Tbsp
vegetable shortening
1 c
onions, sliced
garlic clove, minced
1 c
hot water
bay leaf
2 Tbsp
brown sugar, packed
1/4 c
2 Tbsp
soy sauce
green pepper, in rings

How to Make Short Ribs


  • 1Wipe meat with a damp cloth.
  • 2Trim off excess fat.
  • 3Combine flour, salt and black pepper.
  • 4Dredge meat in mixture to coat completely.
  • 5Heat shortening in large skillet.
  • 6Brown ribs on all sides.
  • 7Remove to a casserole with cover.
  • 8Saute onions and garlic in skillet until golden.
  • 9Spoon over ribs.
  • 10Combine water, bay leaf, brown sugar, vinegar and soy sauce.
  • 11Pour over ribs, cover, and bake at 350 for 1 3/4 hours.
  • 12Add green pepper rings.
  • 13Cook 15 to 20 minutes longer or until meat is tender.
  • 14Remove cooked ribs and vegetables to a serving platter.
  • 15Skim fat off drippings.
  • 16Thicken with a little flour if desired.
  • 17Spoon drippings over meat and vegetables.
