Ingredients

  • 3 pounds beef short ribs
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup onions, sliced
  • 1 - garlic clove, minced
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 - bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 - green pepper, in rings
  • - flour

How To Make short ribs

  • Step 1
    Wipe meat with a damp cloth.
  • Step 2
    Trim off excess fat.
  • Step 3
    Combine flour, salt and black pepper.
  • Step 4
    Dredge meat in mixture to coat completely.
  • Step 5
    Heat shortening in large skillet.
  • Step 6
    Brown ribs on all sides.
  • Step 7
    Remove to a casserole with cover.
  • Step 8
    Saute onions and garlic in skillet until golden.
  • Step 9
    Spoon over ribs.
  • Step 10
    Combine water, bay leaf, brown sugar, vinegar and soy sauce.
  • Step 11
    Pour over ribs, cover, and bake at 350 for 1 3/4 hours.
  • Step 12
    Add green pepper rings.
  • Step 13
    Cook 15 to 20 minutes longer or until meat is tender.
  • Step 14
    Remove cooked ribs and vegetables to a serving platter.
  • Step 15
    Skim fat off drippings.
  • Step 16
    Thicken with a little flour if desired.
  • Step 17
    Spoon drippings over meat and vegetables.
