“This has won in a few taste-testing contests at work & local fairs! It started being made for my Pumpkin Night, but it’s now a must for my husband’s football parties!”

Ingredients

  • 1 pound mild breakfast sausage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 - garlic clove, minced
  • 1 small green bell pepper
  • 1 small red bell pepper
  • 1 small orange bell pepper
  • 28 ounces can diced tomato, undrained (chili flavor)
  • 16 ounces can dark red kidney beans
  • 16 ounces can light red kidney beans
  • 16 ounces can southwestern style black beans
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup water

How To Make jenn's basic chili

  • Step 1
    Sauté sausage & ground beef, onion, peppers & garlic in a large, heavy saucepan until browned, stirring to crumble sausage; drain excess grease.
  • Step 2
    Combine sausage mixture with remaining ingredients in a large stockpot.
  • Step 3
    Cover & simmer 1-1 ½ hours.
  • Step 4
    This can also be done in a crockpot on low for several hours (the longer it cooks the more time the spices have to stew!)
