This is an old Hungarian Goulash recipe that my German Grandma made and my Mom made and I have been making since I was old enough to cook. My husband requests this all the time. We always made ours with flour dumplings but you can use noodles if you prefer.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb
    beef stew meat
  • 1 clove
    garlic i use about 4
  • 2 medium
    onion diced
  • 2 tsp
    paprika i use hungarian
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 1/8 tsp
    pepper i use about 10 peppercorns
  • 2
    beef boullion cubes
  • 2 c
    water divided
  • 2 c
    potato diced
  • 2 Tbsp
    flour

How to Make Hungarian Goulash

Step-by-Step

  1. Cut beef into 1" cubes and brown in a little lard.Add all but one cup of water and potato. Cover and simmer for 2 1/2 hours.
  2. Add 1 cup water and potatoes cut in 3/4"cubes. Cook 2o min.Thicken with 1/4 cup water and 2 Tbs flour.
  3. Flour Dumplings: 2 cups flour. 2 eggs. 1 tsp salt. pinch of baking powder.milk to moisten. Add by lgr spoonfulls to boiling water and let cook for about 4 mins after they start to float. Add dumplings to goulash and serve. Note: I usaully double the dumpling recipe.
