homemade chili
(1 RATING)
I remember one particular time, when I was about 6 or 7 years old, we went to Meme & Gramp’s house in Clayton (N.M.)and Meme was making this chili. After dishing it up, piping hot, she topped each bowl with a squirt of ketchup and a splash of white vinegar - a little bit of the “sweet & sour” effect. I still love to eat my chili this way.

Ingredients
- 2 pounds ground chuck (or lean hamburger)
- 1 medium yellow onion
- 1 package taco seasoning mix
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 46 ounces tomato juice
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1/4 cup sugar, optional
How To Make homemade chili
-
Step 1Brown hamburger meat in a large pot, drain and return to pot.
-
Step 2Dice onion and add to hamburger.
-
Step 3Add taco seasoning, chili powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper to meat/onion, and stir well, cooking the seasonings into the meat.
-
Step 4After cooking for about 10 minutes, add tomato juice and sugar (optional).
-
Step 5Lower heat and simmer (covered) for about 30-45 minutes. Remove cover and "bubble" another 15 minutes, to allow sauce to thicken a bit.
-
Step 6Cool slightly before serving - top dish with a squirt of ketchup and a 1/2 tsp of white vinegar, for a very tasty "sweet and sour" effect.
