I remember one particular time, when I was about 6 or 7 years old, we went to Meme & Gramp’s house in Clayton (N.M.)and Meme was making this chili. After dishing it up, piping hot, she topped each bowl with a squirt of ketchup and a splash of white vinegar - a little bit of the “sweet & sour” effect. I still love to eat my chili this way.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb
    ground chuck (or lean hamburger)
  • 1 medium
    yellow onion
  • 1 pkg
    taco seasoning mix
  • 2 Tbsp
    chili powder
  • 46 oz
    tomato juice
  • 1 Tbsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    pepper
  • 1 Tbsp
    garlic powder
  • 1/4 c
    sugar, optional

How to Make Homemade Chili

Step-by-Step

  1. Brown hamburger meat in a large pot, drain and return to pot.
  2. Dice onion and add to hamburger.
  3. Add taco seasoning, chili powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper to meat/onion, and stir well, cooking the seasonings into the meat.
  4. After cooking for about 10 minutes, add tomato juice and sugar (optional).
  5. Lower heat and simmer (covered) for about 30-45 minutes. Remove cover and "bubble" another 15 minutes, to allow sauce to thicken a bit.
  6. Cool slightly before serving - top dish with a squirt of ketchup and a 1/2 tsp of white vinegar, for a very tasty "sweet and sour" effect.
