This is a great, hearty, and flavorful chili. I have been tweaking this recipe for a few years, and think I finally have it right.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 - onions, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3/4 pound beef sirloin, cubed
  • 1 can petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 bottle (12oz) dark beer (i use jack's pumpkin spice ale, but i have used guiness in the past)
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 2 cans tomato paste
  • 1 can beef broth
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cans pinto beans
  • 2 cans kidney beans

How To Make hearty chili

  • Step 1
    Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. cook onions, garlic, ground beef and cubed sirloin in oil for about 10 minutes, or until the meat is well browned and the onions are tender.
  • Step 2
    Mix in the diced tomatoes, dark beer, coffee, tomato paste, and beef broth. Season with brown sugar, chili powder, cayenne pepper, cumin, cocoa powder and salt. Stir in two cans of beans.
  • Step 3
    Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
  • Step 4
    Srit in the remaining two cans of beans and simmer another 30 minutes.
