This is a great, hearty, and flavorful chili. I have been tweaking this recipe for a few years, and think I finally have it right.

vegetable oil
onions, chopped
3 clove
garlic, minced
1 lb
ground beef
3/4 lb
beef sirloin, cubed
1 can(s)
petite diced tomatoes
1 bottle
(12oz) dark beer (i use jack's pumpkin spice ale, but i have used guiness in the past)
1 c
strong brewed coffee
2 can(s)
tomato paste
1 can(s)
beef broth
1/4 c
packed brown sugar
4 Tbsp
chili powder
1 Tbsp
unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp
cayenne pepper
1 tsp
1 tsp
2 can(s)
pinto beans
2 can(s)
kidney beans

How to Make Hearty Chili


  • 1Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. cook onions, garlic, ground beef and cubed sirloin in oil for about 10 minutes, or until the meat is well browned and the onions are tender.
  • 2Mix in the diced tomatoes, dark beer, coffee, tomato paste, and beef broth. Season with brown sugar, chili powder, cayenne pepper, cumin, cocoa powder and salt. Stir in two cans of beans.
  • 3Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
  • 4Srit in the remaining two cans of beans and simmer another 30 minutes.
