This is a quick casserole version of hamburger steak with onions, brown gravy, and potatoes. It is great comfort food and so easy to make!

This hamburger potato casserole is a flavorful and easy recipe. The final result is a cross between a baked goulash and beef stew. Between the onion soup mix and gravy mixes, there is plenty of seasoning. As this casserole cooks, the gravy thickens and the potatoes soak up all the flavor. The perfect weeknight meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef, lean
  • 4-5 medium potatoes
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 package dry onion soup mix
  • 2 packages brown gravy mix
  • 3 cups water, divided

How To Make hamburger potato casserole

  • Browning ground beef.
    Step 1
    Brown ground beef until no longer pink and drain.
  • Peeled potatoes on a cutting board.
    Step 2
    Wash & peel potatoes.
  • Potatoes cut and in a baking dish.
    Step 3
    Slice potatoes into 1/4 inch strips and place in the bottom of a large deep dish casserole pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray.
  • Pouring water over the potatoes.
    Step 4
    Add one cup of water to cover potatoes.
  • Sprinkling onion soup mix over the potatoes.
    Step 5
    Sprinkle with onion soup mix.
  • Onions added to the baking dish.
    Step 6
    Slice onion and place over the potatoes.
  • Brown gravy mixed with water.
    Step 7
    Mix brown gravy mix with 2 cups of water and whisk to mix.
  • Browned meat and gravy added to the casserole dish.
    Step 8
    Place cooked hamburger meat over the onions and potatoes. Then pour gravy over meat.
  • Casserole baking in the oven.
    Step 9
    Cover with foil. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.
