granny berta's swiss steak
(1 RATING)
I remember my grandmother, Berta Stanaland, making this when I was a kid. It always smelled so good while it was cooking! And the sauce was soooo good on top of mashed potatoes! Of course, Granny always had a big pan of cornbread with butter and honey to go along with it. That was REAL butter and honey fresh from the hive.

- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 1/2 cups ketchup
- 1 (1 lb.) can tomatoes

How To Make granny berta's swiss steak
-
Step 1Combine flour, baking powder, salt and pepper. Pound entire mixture into the meat with a cleaver or glass. Be sure to use the entire mixture and pound it in very well.
-
Step 2Heat shortening in a large, heavy skillet. Add the meat and brown on both sides.
-
Step 3Combine ketchup, tomatoes and water in a small bowl. Place sliced onions over top of meat. Pour tomato mixture over meat. Place bay leaf in sauce.
-
Step 4Reduce heat to low and simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hours until meat is done.
-
Step 5Back when my grandmother was making this there was no such thing as a slow cooker. But, I don't see any reason why you couldn't place it in a slow cooker to let it simmer.
