Ingredients For french onion casserole

  • 3/4 c
    butter
  • 2 lg
    onions, vidalia, peeled & sliced
  • 3 ribs
    celery, sliced
  • 1 loaf
    french bread
  • 2 Tbsp
    all purpose flour
  • 32 oz
    beef broth, reduced sodium
  • 1/4 c
    brewed coffee
  • 3 c
    swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1 can
    french fried onions, cheddar flavor

How To Make french onion casserole

    In a large 2 qt pot, melt butter. Add onions; stir. Reduce heat & cover & cook 45 minutes; stirring every 15 minutes to caramelize the onions.

    After onions are caramelized, add celery & cook for 15 minutes.

    Meanwhile, slice the loaf of bread into 2" cubes & set aside.

    Then add flour & cook 5 minutes.

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

    Stir in broth & coffee & cook for 10 more minutes on medium.

    Pour the soup into a greased 9" X 13" baking dish & top with all the bread cubes; press down into the soup to make them all fit.

    Evenly spread swiss cheese & fried onions.

    Bake 15 minutes or until the top is crispy & browned.

    You can either serve on plates or in bowls, it's thicker than soup, really a casserole with gooey bread & cheesy topside.
