About 10 years ago on Calling all Cooks on Food Network, I saw this recipe and had to make it. It is totally amazing!! Not your typical chili. So many levels of flavors. Sorry for no picture (we've started remodeling our house and I don't have a kitchen). This would be excellent on this cold cloudy day :-)

Ingredients For el cid chili

  • 2 Tbsp
    olive oil
  • 2 lb
    sirloin steak, cut into 1
  • 1/2 lb
    ground beef
  • 12 oz
    chorizo sausage, casing removed, cut 1/2" cubes
  • 1 lg
    yellow onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 c
    chili powder
  • 1 Tbsp
    garlic salt
  • 2 tsp
    cumin
  • 1 tsp
    dried basil
  • 2 can
    beef broth (14.5 oz)
  • 2 can
    whole tomatoes (14.5 oz) drained
  • 1 c
    cilantro, chopped
  • 1
    cinnamon stick
  • 3
    bay leaves
  • 2
    jalapenos, slit lengthwise 3 times each
  • 1 Tbsp
    yellow cornmeal
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 pkg
    chedder cheese (optional)
  • 1 pkg
    sour cream (optional)

How To Make el cid chili

  • 1
    Place oil in a large, heavy pot over medium heat. Brown the sirloin in batches. Remove to a bowl with slotted spoon. Add ground beef, chorizo and onions to the pot and brown. Crumble meat. Return sirloin to pot. Stir in remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

    Before serving, discard cinnamon stick, bay leaves and jalapenos. Garnish with sour cream and shredded cheese, if desired.
