I was a hair stylist for 30 plus years. Every day was a recipe exchange! I got this one from a very dear lady that came faithfully, every week during my entire career, to have her hair styled. This is not the usual Chow Mein Hot Dish recipe, but the best!

prep time 40 Min
cook time 1 Hr
method ---
yield 5-6 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 1 small package chow mein noodles
  • 1/2 medium chopped onion
  • 1 can cream of tomato soup
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 1 cup celery juice
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

How To Make dorothy's chow mein hot dish

  • Step 1
Brown ground beef and onion in oil. Drain.
  • Step 2
Cook celery separately in about 1 cup water until tender enough for your preference (remembering it will cook more as dish bakes).
  • Step 3
Strain celery, reserving liquid and adding enough water to equal 1 cup if needed.
  • Step 4
Mix all ingredients together in fry pan with the meat and onion.
  • Step 5
Put layer of noodles in bottom of greased casserole, then layer of the meat mixture. Layer remainder of meat mixture and noodles, ending with noodles on top.
  • Step 6
Bake covered at 350 degrees for about 50 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 10 minutes until noodles on top are golden brown.
