This is our family's verson of this... My father loved it and my grandmother taught my mother to make it. My grandmother and mother both taught me... now I am teaching my grandchildren... This is good old comfort food, and it is so very easy to make.

prep time 10 Min
cook time 15 Min
method Stove Top
yield 2-1 /2 Quarts

Ingredients

  • MAIN SAUCE INGREDIENTS
  • 1/2 gallon milk
  • 2 sticks butter (can use margarine)
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • SAUCE THICKENER
  • 1/2 cup milk (you need only enough to form a thick liquid)
  • 1/2 cup corn starch (if you want a thicker sauce, add more to more milk until it is the way you like it)
  • MEAT AND VEGGIES
  • 2 - 3 jars dried beef (either break it up or chopp it up)
  • 1 package frozen peas (thawed) (use less or more acording to your desires)

How To Make creamed chip beef on toast !

  • Step 1
Mix together the main sauce ingredients in a large stainless steel or non-stick pot. Slowly bring almost to a boil over medium heat (be careful not to scorch!), stirring constantly.
  • Step 2
Mix together the thickener ingredients and slowly add to the hot almost boiling sauce mixture... stirring constantly until well thickened. (If it isn't thick enough, make a bit more thickener and repeat until it is desired thickness.
  • Step 3
Add the chopped up (or torn up) dried beef. Add the thawed peas. When all is hot, turn the heat off.
  • Step 4
Make slices of toast. Butter toast. Cut the toast into desired size cubes.
  • Step 5
Pour desired amount of the sauce mixture over the cut up toast. *** You can also just serve over whole slices of toast the way they did in the old days... but I prefer the bite size pieces, especially for company.
