lean ground beef
1/2 c
tomato ketchup
1/3 c
tomato juice
1/2 tsp
each salt and black pepper
1/8 tsp
red pepper
eggs, beaten
3/4 c
fresh bread crumbs
1/4 c
finely chopped onions
2 tsp
prepared mustard


1/4 c
tomato ketchup
1/2 tsp
prepared mustard
2 tsp
brown sugar


fresh herbs, for garnish

How to Make Cottage Meat Loaf (oven version)


  • 1Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • 2In large bowl, combine ketchup, tomato juice, salt, black and red peppers, eggs, bread crumbs, onions and mustard.
  • 3Mix until thoroughly blended.
  • 4Add ground beef.
  • 5Mix gently but thoroughly.
  • 6Line a 9 X 5-inch loaf pan with foil.
  • 7Press in the beef mixture.
  • 8In a separate bowl, combine the topping ingredients.
  • 9Mix well.
  • 10Spread topping over the meat loaf.
  • 11Bake at 400 degrees F for 35 to 45 minutes or until done.
  • 12Drain off fat.
  • 13Rest meat loaf for 5 minutes before serving.
  • 14Garnish with herbs, if desired.
