  • 1 1/2 lb
    lean ground beef
  • 1/2 c
    tomato ketchup
  • 1/3 c
    tomato juice
  • 1/2 tsp
    each salt and black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp
    red pepper
  • 2
    eggs, beaten
  • 3/4 c
    fresh bread crumbs
  • 1/4 c
    finely chopped onions
  • 2 tsp
    prepared mustard

  • 1/4 c
    tomato ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp
    prepared mustard
  • 2 tsp
    brown sugar

  • ·
    fresh herbs, for garnish

How to Make Cottage Meat Loaf (oven version)


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. In large bowl, combine ketchup, tomato juice, salt, black and red peppers, eggs, bread crumbs, onions and mustard.
  3. Mix until thoroughly blended.
  4. Add ground beef.
  5. Mix gently but thoroughly.
  6. Line a 9 X 5-inch loaf pan with foil.
  7. Press in the beef mixture.
  8. In a separate bowl, combine the topping ingredients.
  9. Mix well.
  10. Spread topping over the meat loaf.
  11. Bake at 400 degrees F for 35 to 45 minutes or until done.
  12. Drain off fat.
  13. Rest meat loaf for 5 minutes before serving.
  14. Garnish with herbs, if desired.
