2 large
onions, chopped
3 can(s)
8-oz each, tomato sauce
1 c
1/2 oz
unsweetened chocolate, cut up
2 Tbsp
chili powder
2 Tbsp
apple cider vinegar
2 tsp
worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tsp
1 tsp
ground cumin
1/2 tsp
1/4 tsp
garlic powder
1/4 tsp
ground allspice
1/8 tsp
ground cloves
bay leaf
dried red chili pepper or
1/4 tsp
ground red pepper
hot cooked spaghetti noodles


chopped onions
shredded cheddar cheese
1 can(s)
15-oz kidney beans, drained and warmed
oyster crackers
hot sauce

How to Make Cincinnati-Style Chili


  • 1In a 4 1/2 quart Dutch oven or heavy saucepan, cook ground beef with the 2 onions until beef is no longer pink; drain off any fat.
  • 2Add the tomato sauce, water, chocolate, chili powder, vinegar, worchestershire sauce, cinnamon, cumin, salt, garlic powder, allspice, clove, bay leaf, and red chili pepper or ground red pepper.
  • 3Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, over low heat for 45 minutes or until desired consistency; stirring once or twice.
  • 4Remove bay leaf and, if using, chili pepper. Serve over hot cooked spaghetti and, if desired, top with onions, cheese and/or beans. Offer Oyster crackers and hot sauce!
