I loved chicken fried chicken at Cracker Barrel when I was pregnant with my daughter. My hubby teased me about it, but when I made him this steak version after she was born (and I could stand to smell anything frying), he was a convert!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2-3 lb
    round steak
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 5 oz
    evaporated milk
  • 2 c
    flour
  • 2 Tbsp
    green tabasco sauce
  • 2 tsp
    paprika
  • 3/4 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    fresh ground pepper
  • ·
    vegetable oil

How to Make Chicken Fried Steak

Step-by-Step

  1. Trim steak and pound if needed to 1/2' thick. Cut into 6-8 pieces. Combine milk, tabasco and salt. Combine 1 c flour and spices. Dip steak into plain 1 c flour, then milk, then seasoned flour. Set aside meat until all coated. Heat 1-2" oil in heavy fry pan and fry meat golden, about 2 min per side. Drain on paper towels. Serve with cream gravy made from seasoned flour. Serve with mashed potatoes and biscuits.
  2. NOTE: can use chicken if pounded thin.
