Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb
    ground beef
  • 1
    diced onion
  • 1
    celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 32 oz
    tomato sauce
  • 4 oz
    mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 c
    water
  • 3/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    sugar
  • 1/4 tsp
    pepper
  • 3
    potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 4 oz
    shredded mozzarella cheese

How to Make Cheese-Topped Beef and Potato Bake

Step-by-Step

  1. Cook beef, onion and celery until browned.
  2. Stir in tomato sauce, mushrooms, water, salt, sugar and pepper.
  3. Heat to boiling; reduce heat to low.
  4. Cover and simmer 5 minutes.
  5. Into a 9x13-inch baking dish, spoon 1/3 of beef mixture.
  6. Arrange 1/2 of potato slices on top.
  7. Repeat, ending with ground beef mixture.
  8. Cover dish with foil.
  9. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 1 hour or until potatoes are tender.
  10. Remove from oven.
  11. Discard foil.
  12. Sprinkle with cheese.
  13. Return to oven just until cheese melts.
