Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter or vegetable oil
- 2 large onions, chopped
- 1 large green pepper, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 pounds ground beef
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup a 1 sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon white pepper
- 3 - x-large eggs
- MUSHROOMS FOR GRAVY
- 8 ounces mushrooms, fresh or canned
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
- MUSHROOM GRAVY
- 1/4 cup fat from meatloaf or 1/2 stick of butter
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 2 cups strained pan drippings or beef broth
- 2 tablespoons dry sherry
How To Make best meatloaf

Step 1Preheat oven to 350. 13x9x3 pan or cast iron skillet. Heat butter or oil in skillet and cook 1 1/2 cups of the onions along with the green pepper and garlic for 5 minutes. Put them in a bowl and then add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, steak sauce and the s & p.

Step 2Mix eggs until frothy and then add to the meat mixture. Put in the pan and shape into a loaf. Top with 1/3 of the remaining onions.

Step 3Fill pan 1/2 way up the loaf with water and sprinkle in the remaining onions. Bake 45-60 minutes and let stand until firm, about 10 minutes.

Step 4To Make Mushroom Sauce: Cook 8 oz of fresh mushrooms in 3 Tbs. of butter and 1 Tbsp of garlic until soft. Set aside. Heat the 1/4 cup of fat from the meatloaf and stir in the flour and pepper and cook until flour turns golden. Stir in the 2 cups of strained pan drippings or the beef broth and sherry (if using) and cook until thick and bubbly. Add the reserved mushrooms and serve with the sliced meatloaf.
