Did you know, the term "Salisbury steak" has been in use in the United States since 1897 to describe this hamburger patty in gravy? The invention of this particular dish is credited to Dr. J. H. Salisbury, who was an early proponent of the low-carb diet for good health and weight loss!

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground chuck
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground, black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon dehydrated onion flakes
  • 1 small green pepper, very finely minced (i put in the food processor)
  • 1 cup cracker crumbs, very finely ground
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 packages brown gravy mix or enough to make 2 cups
  • 1/2 tablespoon browning sauce, such as kitchen bouquet
  • - sauteed mushrooms and onions (optional)

How To Make amy's sensational salisbury steak

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2
    Rehydrate onion flakes by just covering them with hot water and soaking them until all the water is absorbed.
  • Step 3
    In a large mixing bowl, add the ground chuck, onion powder, rehydrated onions, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and minced green pepper, cracker crumbs, and egg. Mix until thoroughly combined.
  • Step 4
    Shape the meat mixture into 8 oval shaped patties. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Step 5
    In a small sauce pan, prepare the gravy according to package directions. Mix in 1/2 Tbsp. browning sauce.
  • Step 6
    Brown patties in large, lightly greased, Iron skillet, over medium heat. When steaks are thoroughly browned, Remove from pan. Drain of grease.
  • Step 7
    Return steaks to pan, and Pour gravy over them.
  • Step 8
    Place skillet in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees, uncovered for 30 minutes.
  • Step 9
    Serve along side cooked rice or mashed potatoes and a cooked vegetable. You can also add sauteed mushrooms and/or onions to the gravy if desired.
