Red and blue or purple food coloring, optional

1 cup butter, softened (preferably 1/2 cup salted butter, 1/2 cup unsalted)
•
seeds of 1 vanilla bean
•
3 cups powdered sugar
•
1 tsp vanilla extract
•
2 1/2 - 3 Tbsp milk
•
2 Tbsp heavy cream
