German Sausage & Peppers

"A German twist on classic sausage and peppers made with German beer...."

INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
5 bratwursts
½ cup German beer
2 shallots, thinly sliced
5 small sweet bell peppers (or 2 regular bell peppers), thinly sliced
5 cloves garlic, very thinly sliced
1 pint mushrooms, thinly sliced
⅛ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
fresh basil, sliced thinly (for garnish)
4 rolls, for serving (optional)
