INGREDIENTS
1/2 pound unsalted butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening (yes, shortening)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3 cups sugar
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk
5 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups flour
1/2 cup unsalted butter, for icing
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 cup packed brown sugar, for icing
1/2 teaspoon mace (don't leave this out)
1/3 cup heavy cream, for icing
1/2 teaspoon allspice
2 cups confectioners' sugar, for icing
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla, for icing
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
