butterscotch rum homemade hot chocolate
I love this treat during cold weather or stormy days. Make it a date for two and cuddle with the hubs along with a toasty mug! When serving to children, replace rum with rum extract (2 tbsp).

Ingredients
- 5 cups whole milk
- 3 cups water
- 1/2 cup special dark cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
- 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips, add more if desired
- 3/4 cup butterscotch chips
- 1/2 cup spiced rum
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons vanilla
- 1 teaspoon butter
How To Make butterscotch rum homemade hot chocolate

Step 1Place all ingredients in a saucepan and heat to medium, but not a boil. Whisk thoroughly.

Step 2Lower heat to low and cover with a lid. Cook for 20-30 minutes.

Step 3Optionally, sometimes I like to make it a little frothy, so I whip it with a submersion blender, right before serving. Or I have a special kettle I make cocoa in, as seen in picture. Very good.

Step 4Serve with homemade marshmallows or a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
