Granita is a semi-frozen dessert made from sugar, water and various flavorings

We always have an abundance of watermelons, cantalopes, honeydew melons and peaches in the summer from our farm.In the evenings you can always find us out by the bonfire with friends and neighbors relaxing after a long hot day. This is the perfect summer refresher to cool off.By using a basic granita you can adapt any fruits to a frozen margarita, colada or a refreshing treat... similar to a sorbet or Italian ice
To make watermelon colada's add some frozen granita to a blender with rum to taste.. granish with lime

How to Make Basic Granita Watermelon Colada

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves..... Let cool
  2. Puree the watermelon in a food processor or blender until smooth
  3. Add the sugar syrup and watermelon and blend a few more times
  4. Pour into a large shallow baking dish and place in the freezer. After 30 minutes, remove.
  5. Scrape the frozen outer edges into the middle of the pan. Return the mix to the freezer. Repeat this every 30 minutes until the mixture is frozen (about 3 hours). Place into a container and cover. This will keep for about a week
  6. If you want a simple lemon or lime Italian ice, I've used bottled lemon or lime juice with success
