I love to watch horse races and, of course, the Kentucky Derby is my favorite. One year, I decided to drink a Mint Julep while enjoying the festivities of race day. It took me many, many attempts until I finally decided on this recipe. This is the one I like. I hope you do too.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

Oh, Janice, we didn't like this classic cocktail we loved it. This Mint Julep recipe is definitely not for the faint of heart. It's meant to be sipped so the ice melts while drinking. The simple instructions make preparing this refreshing cocktail at home a cinch. Muddling the mint leaves makes it quite refreshing and mixes wonderfully with the slightly sweet drink. It's smooth as silk and perfect to sip on for the Kentucky Derby or throughout the summer.

Note: You do have to like bourbon to enjoy this cocktail since bourbon is the primary flavor. We recommend using a high-quality bourbon. Test Kitchen Avatar The Test Kitchen

Ingredients

  • 10 to 15
    mint leaves, muddled
  • ·
simple syrup (1 part sugar to 1 part water, boiled until sugar dissolves)
  • 2 oz
    your favorite bourbon
  • ·
    crushed ice... lots of it

How to Make Mint Julep

Step-by-Step

  1. Gather ingredients.
  2. Place the mint leaves in the bottom of the cup to muddle. (Don't tear the leaves) Set aside one leaf for garnish.
  3. Add 1 ounce of simple syrup. (You may add more or less if you like depending on how sweet you want this.)
  4. Add the bourbon.
  5. Add crushed ice and stir for about 30 seconds.
  6. Add more crushed ice and stir again. The ice will dilute the drink and frost the cup and that's what you want. Garnish with a mint leaf.
  7. COOKS NOTE: The proper cup to use is silver or pewter. I believe they can be purchased at your local BEVMO.
