This was one of the most popular Mai Tai drinks served at the Tonga Room (a popular tiki-themed Polynesian bar) in San Francisco.

Ingredients

  • - ice cubes
  • 1 ounce dark rum
  • 1 ounce light rum
  • 1 splash - grenadine syrup
  • 1/2 ounce orgeat (almond flavor syrup - i use the torani syrup for flavoring coffee)
  • 2 ounces prepared orange juice
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec (or other orange flavored liqueur)
  • 1 - pineapple wedge (for garnish)
  • 1 - maraschino cherry (for garnish)
  • 1/2 cup - crushed ice

How To Make tiki style mai tai

  • Step 1
    Place ice cubes in a cocktail shaker. Add dark rum, light rum, almond syrup, grenadine, orange juice, and pineapple juice. Shake vigorously until well blended.
  • Step 2
    Place crushed ice in a Collins glass. Strain the cocktail over the crushed ice.
  • Step 3
    Float the triple sec on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon. Garnish with a cocktail skewer threaded with a pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry, and serve immediately with a straw.
