Paradise Sunrise

Vickie Parks

This Carnival cocktail was created by a creative mixologist at a New Orleans hotel years ago, and it has become a favorite among Mardi Gras revelers. It's not exactly a "layered" drink. But it does have varying color tones. Once the juices and liqueurs begin to settle and meld together, the drink takes on a deep red base with varying shades of red above it. Though no one will care if you choose to imbibe at once, instead of waiting for the layers to "settle".

How to Make Paradise Sunrise

  1. Place ice in a tall collins glass or tall beverage glass.
  2. Fill cocktail shaker with 5 or 6 ice cubes. Add tequila, Schnapps, simple syrup, passionfruit juice and orange juice. Shake well, then strain into Collins glass over ice.
  3. Slowly pour the grenadine down one side of the glass and let it sink to the bottom.
  4. Add cherry juice to a spoon, and slowly pour the cherry juice on top (it will float at first and eventually sink lower into the drink). Garnish with a cherry (or 2), and serve.
