I've been making this cocktail for over 20 years, and I don't remember if it was someone else's recipe, or just a serendipitous accident when I bought my first bottle of orgeat and decided to add it to my margarita. LOL. it's a great change-up from the rum-based one.

yield 1 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • citrus salt, optional - see note
  • 1 1/2 ounces reposado or anejo tequila (don't use white)
  • 3/4 ounce lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce cointreau or triple sec
  • 1/2 ounce orgeat

How To Make mexican mai tai

  • Step 1
OPTIONAL: To make a citrus salt rim, combine some coarse margarita salt, lime zest and orange zest to taste. Take the juiced rind of the lime and rub around the rim of a glass. Dip the rim in the citrus salt, add some ice, and set aside.
  • Step 2
Add ice to a cocktail shaker. Add the tequila, lime juice, Cointreau, and orgeat. Shake until frosty - about 20 seconds. Strain into the salt-rimmed, ice-filled glass.
  • Step 3
You can garnish with a cocktail cherry, a slice of lime, a pineapple spear, or a dried orange slice, or really any fruity garnish you want.
