This is the way I've made Sangria since the 1960's.

Ingredients

  • 1 large orange
  • 1 large lime
  • 1 large lemon
  • 1-1/2 cup good quality rum
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 bottle good quality red wine (750 ml)
  • 1 cup orange juice (fresh if available)
  • 1 sprig mint (optional)

How To Make classic sangria (sallye)

  • Step 1
Slice orange, lime and lemon into thin slices. Set aside Pour rum and sugar into large glass pitcher. Stir gently until sugar dissolves. Add fruit slices to the pitcher. Place in fridge to chill for 2 hours.
  • Step 2
When ready to serve, remove pitcher from fridge. Crush fruit slightly using wooden muddle or spoon. Gently stir in orange juice and wine until well blended. You may add more sugar for extra sweetness if desired.
  • Step 3
Best served while still chilled. May be served over crushed ice, but it will dilute the flavor.
