Grandma W certainly was not a drinker, so seeing alcohol in her recipes always surprises me. Proof (yes, pun intended) in point would be her bourbon balls...she seemed to have a very heavy hand with alcohol!

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups vodka
- 1 1/4 cups sugar syrup
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 teaspoon anise extract
- - yellow food coloring
How To Make annisette, grandma w (creme de menthe option also)

Step 1Combine in glass jar with tight lid and store in cool dark place for at least a week.

Step 2Notes: Syrup is made from peel of 1/2 lemon, 1 1/2 c sugar and 1 c water. Blot peel on paper towel to remove oil. Combine with water and sugar in saucepan to boiling, stirring often. Strain and cool to room temperature. Put in glass jar, makes about 1 3/4 c syrup.

Step 3To make crème de menthe, substitute anise extract with 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract. (Then I would omit the lemon in the sugar syrup)
